I feel incredibly grateful that someone gave me a partner, a good knife, and an on-call emergency medic and otherwise got the fck out of the way. Below, he recounts how he found solace in nature amidst a torturous childhood, how life as an outdoor adventurer has transformed him every bit as much as his medical transition and how he fended off jaguars and feasted on snake vertebrae while completely naked and somewhat afraid in the Honduran jungle. They were initially interested in my wife and me. I also have the survival skills and experience. Honestly, no matter your gender identity, meeting someone for the first time while naked on the first day of a survivalist challenge in the middle of a new place is a highly pressurized situation. In the scene where we finally meet, I tell my partner Theresa about my surgery and my scars.

Naked and Afraid is a Discovery Channel reality TV show, now in its 10th season, in which a male and female couple must survive a naked day stay in the wilderness by securing food, water and shelter. Mountain is a dog sledder from Alaska who is an arctic survivalist and has military experience. I have scars and stuff from surgery. I am transgender. Mountain then tells viewers that he never identified as a girl and decided to transition about eight or nine years ago.
As mainstream America becomes more familiar with the unique journeys transgender people take, both through their increased visibility in media and entertainment and the fraught political debates around the rights we afford and deny them, it's still absolutely essential that trans people tell their own stories, in their own voices. Los Angeles-based artist T. Chick McClure does just that. Working in the medium of photography, McClure explores themes of gender, identity and authenticity through portraiture self and of others and images of the body.
